DAK LAK – THE LEGENDARY LAND OF ELEPHANTS
Dak Lak Province is located in the western of the Central Highlands in Vietnam, an area of 13.125 square kilometers and the population of nearly 1.8 million. The North is adjacent to Gia Lai province, the South to Lam Dong and Dak Nong, the East to Phu Yen and Khanh Hoa province, and the Western is bordered with Cambodia.
Dak Lak is a low plateau, around 400-800 meters above sea level. The land is relatively flat, sometimes slightly wavy and is separated by valleys, rivers and streams. There are meadows stretching in the East, lower terrain in the West. The Se Re Poc river flows through here and forms a large waterfall. The South is the domain of lowland with the 500-hectare Lak lake, Krong and Krong Ana river form a river basin with thousands of hectares of fertile land. The transportation is complete and very convenient. Airway has been built for a long time and are now being invested, upgraded and regularly hosts international and domestic delegations.
Dak Lak has a cool and temperate climate. It is located in the center of basaltic land, suitable for industrial plants and timber, especially coffee and rubber. It facilitates the development of the specialized areas of perennial industrial trees, which is a strength of this province.
Dak Lak has an area of forests and timber reserves, there are many kinds of precious wood such as rose-wood, Narra Padauk, Techicai Sitan, Santai wood, Pyinkado, Goldden oak, Menghundor…The forest has many types of floras and faunas. There are many species in bulk, such as elephants, tigers, leopards, deer, buffalo, bison, rhinos … Especially Yok Don national park, hundreds of thousands of hectares vast, protects rare animal species in our country. Yok Don is also a place for many elephants living in herds. There are many medicinal plants such as Asparagus cochinchinensis, Pleomele cochinchinenis,…
Dak Lak has many scenic and cultural relics, ancient history, such as a 500-hectare Lak lake located between the beautiful lake and romantic valley; Dray H’Linh waterfall, which is 15 kilometers far away from Buon Me Thuot city; resorts and Buon Don rustic suspension bridge but attracting domestic and international eco-tourists; the vast natural Apricot forest located on the left bank of the Krong Ana river; Cham towers in Ea Sup district 8m high and 5m broad, built from the thirteenth century; Ban Me Thuot “long home” shows the evidence of the crimes of imperialism, colonialism, and resilience of communist soldiers; Lac Giao nail, which recorded the footprints of ethnic Vietnamese in the new land along with the covenant of peaceful coexistence with Thuong compatriots.
Dak Lak has a longstanding culture and unique folklore developed early with many types: mythology, jokes, tales, fables … The epics such as Dam San, Xinh Nha, Dam Kteh … is not only the pride of Dak Lak people, but also the “jewel” in the folklore treasure of the Vietnamese people. Especially, the Space of Gong Culture in Dak Lak and other provinces of Central Highlands of Vietnam has been recognized by UNESCO as Masterpiece of the Intangible Heritage of Humanity (25-11-2005).
